Club Crown Heights Afterschool Programs
1-760-726-4900 Ext. 6306THE NEED
Youth in Oceanside’s Crown Heights neighborhood are overcoming significant odds to achieve success. Parents in this low-income community often work multiple jobs or are single parents. Increasing rental costs have led to two or more families living in one apartment, creating a densely populated area with two rival gangs in adjacent neighborhoods. Most Crown Heights families have few options for afterschool care. This makes youth vulnerable to drugs and violence and has led to strong community support for local youth programs.PROGRAM SUMMARY
Club Crown Heights afterschool programs give neighborhood kids a safe place after school to complete their homework, build leadership skills, and plan for successful futures.
Program Services
Club Crown Heights programs are aligned within a Positive Youth Development model, “Triple E”. Triple E focuses on Education, including homework support and after school tutoring; Employment, by giving students the tools they need to find their first job; and Civic Engagement, providing opportunities for students to lead and/or participate in community projects and events. In 2016, Club Crown Heights launched a STEM Education Project that encourages students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math subjects.
Who We Help
Club Crown Heights is a free afterschool program that serves kids in grades K-12 who live in the Crown Heights, Oceanside neighborhood.
Story
Jose was a long-term Club Crown Heights kid who overcame the obstacles of growing up in a gang-ridden neighborhood and graduated last year. Here is how Jose describes his achievement:
“My biggest fear was getting older because of what the Crown Heights streets would pull me in to, but through Club Crown Heights and Lifeline Community Services I was successful in getting the daily courage, motivation, and strength to be a better me. Club Crown Heights made me the man I am today through leadership and the ability to make positive choices on my own. I can say I am the first in my family to graduate and attended a four-year college at the University of Cal State San Marcos, setting my sights on graduating in four years with a degree in Psychology – hopefully with the ability to pay it to forward to my Crown Heights community.”
Our Impact
Last year more than 150 kids participated in Club Crown Heights afterschool programs and achieved the following outcomes:

- 100% of enrolled youth reported no, or reduced, substance abuse as measured by self-reports.
- 100% of youth participating in intensive case management or counseling increased their resiliency score on the San Diego Risk and Resiliency Checklist
- 98% of youth reported they feel safer and more engaged in their community.
